ISLAMABAD:

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Monday expressed grave concern over the alleged abduction of female lawyer Irshad Nasreen from the court premises of Dipalpur – a city in Punjab – and stated that the lawyers’ community in the country was not safe.

Terming the recent incidents involving abduction and killing of lawyers from Sargodha, Faisalabad and Kasur utterly disturbing in a statement, the bar association noted that the situation was an example of lawlessness in society.

“Above all, the unjustified silence and lethargic investigative procedures being adopted by law enforcement agencies are adding fuel to the concerns and anxiety of legal fraternity of Pakistan whereas the culprits are enjoying impunity,” the SCBA said.

“The body being the apex bar of the country and pioneer of Protection of Human Rights and upholding of Rule of Law hereby demands urgent punitive action against the elements involved in these notorious incidents so that offenders may be put behind bars,” it added.

“The SCBA is further of the view that it is due to disinclination and unwillingness of incumbent lawmakers that lawyers’ community by and large is facing such trying times.”

The association declared that such incidents could be prevented if the sitting administration takes stringent steps towards the protection of lawyers.

“Due to [the]negligent approach of incumbent ruling elite, we hear more of the same incidents on a daily basis,” it said.

The SCBA urged upon the governing machinery and law enforcement agencies to make all possible arrangements for the safety and security of lawyers’ community to avoid any such incident in future.
