NUML to set up EU’s Jean Monnet Chair

It will focus on teaching, research and policy debate on EU as actor in South Asia

In a first for the country, the National Unive rsity of Modern Languages (NUML) has secured the prestigious Jean Monnet Chair of the European Union.

The chair will be established at its International Relations Department, in the Faculty of Social Sciences and will be headed by the department’s head Dr Riaz Shad.

Addressing a ceremony in this regard, NUML Rector Major-General (retired) Muhammad Jaffar said that the chair, as a platform, will serve to build the capacity of faculty and students for achieving Erasmus+ scholarships and research projects.

Social Sciences Dean Dr Shahid Siddiqui hoped that the chair will lead to motivating and guiding its faculty to compete for international research projects.

Dr Shad, who holds a doctorate in politics of the European Union (EU) and has significantly published in the area of contemporary European politics and EU-Pakistan relations, had beaten off competition from 1,447 eligible applications to be selected among the lucky 240 applicants to secure the chair. The title of the chair being established at NUML is ‘The European Union as an Actor in South Asia’.

From the Asian region, China secured three chairs, India two, and Pakistan one.
