'Supernatural' star Jensen Ackles joins cast of 'The Boys'

The actor will be working with 'Supernatural' creator again for the show

Supernatural actor Jensen Ackles is all set to star in season three of the series The Boys, reported Variety.

Ackles and Amazon Prime Video made the announcement on Monday, with Ackles taking to Instagram to share the news. "I keep wondering what I’ll do when Supernatural finally ends this year,” he wrote. He will be playing the role of Soldier Boy in the series, who is the original superhero in the drama.

Created by Eric Kripke, The Boys will be Ackles' second time teaming up with Kripke who is also responsible for creating the super hit show Supernatural. "When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream — to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment. I’m happy to say that dream has come true," joked Kripke in a statement.

"Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother. As Soldier Boy, the very first superhero, he’ll bring so much humor, pathos, and danger to the role. I can’t wait to be on set with him again, and bring a bit of 'supernatural’ to The Boys,” he added.

The show has been renewed for a third season just ahead of the premiere of its second season, which will be released on Amazon on September 4. Based on a best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the show was picked up by Kripke who is also the showrunner. Ackles, on the other hand, has been a constant on Kripke's Supernatural since 2005, when it first premiered on WB. It was scheduled to wrap up in May with its 15th and final season, however, the pandemic forced a production shutdown. The final season will now come to CW in fall.
