RAWALPINDI:

As bike-riding thrill-seekers and revellers poured into the streets of Rawalpindi on August 14 to celebrate Independence Day, at least four over-eager youngsters were booked for dangerous driving while 144 vehicles were impounded.

Data issued by the Rawalpindi City Traffic Police (CTP) on Saturday disclosed that police had issued tickets to 879 people for defying traffic rules. Moreover, vehicles were impounded for breaking the traffic rules.

Police also booked four motorcyclists for one-wheeling and performing dangerous stunts on their motorbikes on Independence Day.

Rawalpindi Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Ali Akbar said that in the wake of Independence Day, and the relaxations in the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) lockdown, they had deputed special squads at key thoroughfares and intersections including on Murree Road, Peshawar Road, Mall Road, Airport Road and other areas of the district.

They were tasked with remaining vigilant and to act against any one-wheelers per the law.

While traffic wardens already check for one-wheeling, Akbar said that on August 14, a host of other measures were also taken to clamp down on the reckless activity.
