Authorities gear up to fight dengue

Over 17,000 hot spots selected for spray in Lahore

While coronavirus pandemic has been brought under control almost throughout the city, the fear of dengue fever is now arising.

The number of patients affected by the mosquito bites has gradually increased due to which a number of areas in the city have been declared dangerous. The district administration of Lahore has started spray to kill mosquitoes across the city.

Dengue mosquito bites have been causing illness and death in the provincial capital for some time now. Before the monsoon, the district administration, in collaboration with the Lahore Metropolitan Corporation and the health department, arranged sprays to kill mosquitoes.

The district administration has prepared lists of areas affected by dengue in recent years, so that like every year, 40 buildings around an affected house can be targeted and sprayed to eradicate dengue larvae. In Lahore, as many as 17,694 locations in nine zones and cantonment areas have been declared as hot spots so that spray can be done there. For this, teams were formed under the supervision of all the assistant commissioners.

The hot spots identified in Lahore include 2,047 in Allama Iqbal Zone, Aziz Bhatti Zone 2,205, Data Ganj Bakhsh Zone 1,427, Gulberg Zone 1,243, Nishtar Zone 1,574, Ravi Zone 1,799, Samanabad Zone 1,513, Shalimar Zone 1,705, Wagah Zone 2,620 and 1,471 hot spots in Cantonment Board area where dengue larvae are growing.

Most of the hot spots are in Band Road, Gulshan Ravi, Shadbagh, Karim Park, Mughalpura, Baghbanpura, Railway slum areas, Misri Shah, Badami Bagh, Gulberg Mecca Colony Township, Shahdara, Begum Kot, Farrukhabad, Mohani Road Samanabad, Bilalganj, Taj Bagh and Garhi Shahu.

The Lahore district administration has targeted factories, tire shops, warehouses, houses and cemeteries in these areas. The number of patients affected by dengue mosquito bites is 15, which is gradually increasing.

Deputy Commissioner Lahore Danish Afzal, along with assistant commissioners and health department officers has targeted hot spot areas and started sprays to curb dengue larvae and notices are being issued to the owners of houses and factories where larvae were found.
