On the Independence Day, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Pakistan emphasized adopting nature-based solutions, reviving natural waterways, halting deforestation, promoting environment-friendly tourism and conserving rainwater through effective and innovative storage systems in place at different scales.
The WWF-Pakistan spokesperson appreciated Prime Minister Imran Khan’s initiative to increase green cover and plant more trees across the country under the Clean and Green Pakistan Initiative.
“These plantation drives will help mitigate climate change impacts, protect wildlife and promote livelihoods coupled with creating more green jobs,” he said.
During July 2019 to June 2020, the organisation in collaboration with the relevant government departments, local communities and students planted approximately 670,000 saplings of various native trees, including mangroves and fruit trees, in different cities and rural areas of the country.
'Plant for Pakistan' campaign kicks off across the country
Sharing his views, Hammad Naqi Khan, Director General (DG) of WWF-Pakistan, said the organization is working to protect Pakistan’s forests, wildlife, freshwater reserves and other natural resources.
Hammad appealed to the public to support conservation establishments in their campaigns to assist them in increasing forest cover, conserving wildlife and protecting the environment in the country.
He called on the citizens to actively protect indigenous trees, snow leopards, Indus water dolphins and other local wildlife from unscrupulous elements.
“Everyone should stand up against wildlife crime, deforestation, and several other threats to nature,” the WWF DG maintained.
We must protect our natural resources and the environment not only for future generations, but for ourselves too, to survive, he underscored.
