Pakistani celebrities pay their respects to Air India crash victims

From Hamza Ali Abbasi to Shahid Afridi, local public figures have expressed their sympathies

As many as 18 people were killed and dozens injured when an Air India Express passenger plane overshot the runway and broke into two after landing in the southern city of Calicut in heavy rain on Friday, officials said. The Boeing-737 flight from Dubai was flying home Indians stranded overseas due to the coronavirus pandemic. There were 190 passengers and crew on board, the civil aviation ministry said in a statement. Among them were 10 infants.

In wake of the tragedy, many public figures from Pakistan have expressed their condolences. Actor Hamza Ali Abbasi, extended prayers for the deceased and injured. "An extremely sad and tragic incident. Prayers for the deceased and injured," he said in a tweet.

Bewafa actor Ushna Shah also did the same deeming the current year as an "unforgiving" one. "2020 is an unforgiving year. Thoughts and prayers for the victims of the Air India flight," she said on Twitter.

Armeena Khan expressed sympathy for the victims talking about how Pakistan itself witnessed a similar tragedy. "I remember the PIA flight crash not long ago and now this. Loss of life is always tragic, all humans feel the same pain. My condolences and prayers to the bereaved families," she said.

Veena Malik also expressed the same sentiments."We are feeling the pain as felt by the beloved ones of those who lost their precious lives and got injured. We are deeply sad with our Indian brothers and sisters in this moment of grief," she said.

Cricketers Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez also took to social media to express their sympathies. "Really sad to hear the devastating news coming of Kerela. My thoughts and sympathies with all of the affected families and victims," Afridi said in a tweet.

"Sad news about Air India condolences to effected families and best wishes for all injured to get well soon," Hafeez tweeted.
