The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) and local government bodies have formed sub-divisional committees assigned the tasks of removing offal from the streets and fumigation during Eid.

SSWMB workers have been given the responsibility for disposing of animals’ remains and district municipal corporations’ employees are to spray insecticides on all days of Eid across Sindh.

The move came in the wake of directives issued by Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah in a meeting on Friday.

At the meeting, the provincial minister stated that the committees would work under the supervision of relevant assistant commissioners.

Besides, the minister had declared that nobody would be allowed to slaughter animals at locations other than the spots designated for the purpose, adding that action would be taken against those found guilty of violating this instruction.

Shah further said that the steps taken to promote collective sacrifices in view of the pandemic were commendable. He added that Pakistan Peoples Party chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had asked the Sindh government to improve sanitation, especially on Eid, and develop a policy for the successful completion of collective sacrifices, further stressing the role of elected local government representatives.

Also speaking on the occasion, SSWMB managing director Kashif Gulzar told the meeting that 1.08 million tonnes of offal was expected to be produced on Eid this year.

Apprising the meeting of the plan for waste disposal, he said that the SSWMB had been running two landfill sites in Karachi, each spanning an area of 500 acres, in Gond Pass and Jam Chakro. He added that trenches at these sites had been excavated for the disposal of offal on Eid. Offal will be collected from all districts and dumped in those trenches, which will then be buried to avoid any environmental hazards, he explained.
