FAISALABAD:

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) has call for a facilitation desk at the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) to resolve problems of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) on a priority basis.

Addressing a zoom meeting with FCCI President Rana Sikandar Azam Khan, Smeda Provincial Chief Javaid Afzal underlined the objectives of the authority and emphasised that it had been serving the SME sector for the past 22 years.

“The authority tries its best to facilitate SMEs through sector development and policy formulation in addition to technology up-gradation,” he said. “We follow the practice of forwarding budget proposals to the federal government with proper input received from various chambers and associations.”

It was agreed in the meeting that Smeda Regional Business Consultant (RBC) Shaban Cheema would attend the relevant meetings of the FCCI standing committees to understand the problems of this sector.

Smeda chief directed Cheema to submit a comprehensive report of his activities. He pointed out that the RBC had already been directed to expedite efforts to facilitate the concerned stakeholders.

Earlier, the FCCI president highlighted that Faisalabad was dominated by SMEs and the power loom industry had excelled in the past few decades, however, it was now facing multiple problems and experiencing negative growth.

He urged Smeda to focus on power loom businesses and resolve their genuine problems on priority basis.

Talking about Smeda facilitation desk at FCCI, he requested Afzal to move a formal proposal so that funding could be arranged from the Export Development Fund or Pakistan Social Development Program.
