HYDERABAD:

The Youth Action Committee (YAC) staged a protest outside the Hyderabad Press Club on Sunday, demanding the release of Sindhi nationalist workers allegedly subjected to enforced disappearance.

"If courts exist and are functional, why are people [kept] in illegal detention for months or years?" questioned Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz's Dr Niaz Kalani during the demonstration. He added that if they were involved in any crime, they should be booked and produced in court.

YAC's Sindhu Nawaz Ghangro said keeping people in illegal detention for months or years negated human rights. "If their crimes are serious, they should be prosecuted in the courts,” she remarked.

Activist Jami Chandio and Human Rights Commission of Pakistan regional coordinator Imdad Chandio also demanded the freedom of missing persons.

A woman, whose brother was recently picked up, claimed he was ill and under treatment. "We told the men who came for him that he was sick, but they didn't listen," she said.
