Grand Democratic Alliance MPA Nusrat Sehar Abbasi visited the Sir C J Institute of Psychiatry in Hyderabad on Monday and later, while talking to media persons, expressed dismay over the lack of facilities at the hospital.
She claimed that almost all the patients with whom she spoke complained of a lack of the facilities at the hospital. "I visit it [the hospital] after receiving complaints from patients."
"I have seen how they treat female patients," she said and alleged that patients were being served poor quality meal at the facility.
Abbassi said despite the hospital being the largest mental health facility in Sindh, there was a dearth of services at the Sir C J Institute of Psychiatry. She claimed that she had asked relevant officials to share the details of patients admitted to the hospital as well as the record of the out-patient department, but they were not available.
"Who knows, I may also have to come to this hospital because I am always subjected to mental torture in the Sindh Assembly," she remarked. "I should know about facilities where I may get [myself] treated."
According to her, the hospital's medical superintendent (MS), Dr Aijaz Qadir Patoli, was absent during her visit. She said the MS had closed down a laboratory at the facility so that he could get a luxurious office constructed in its place at a cost of Rs40 million. She also claimed that standard operating procedures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 were not being followed at the hospital.
She maintained that Pakistan Peoples Party chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was being misguided about the state of services in Sindh's government hospitals.
