Sindh local government secretary Roshan Ali Shaikh agreed on Wednesday to the Central and Korangi district municipal corporation (DMC) heads’ request to assign the responsibility of cleaning their districts to the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB). However, he told them that the SSWMB would be formally given the task after he consulted the local government minister on the matter. Both DMC heads assured the secretary of their department’s staff providing assistance in the task of cleaning nullahs, informing him that rain emergency units had already been set up their areas ahead of the monsoon. Later, addressing a meeting, he said that the World Bank, on the request of the Sindh government, had agreed to issue a grant for cleaning rainwater drains. Competitive and Livable City of Karachi project head Zubair Channa will supervise the task, in coordination with Karachi Metropolitan Corporation focal person Masood Alam, he added.
