ISLAMABAD:

The apex regulator of higher education in the country on Monday said that it has neither evaluated nor has it ‘ranked’ universities registered with it for their readiness to conduct online classes.

In a statement on Monday, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) said that it had asked universities to submit reports on their readiness for online classes. These reports were then shared with the public by uploading them on to its website.

The commission said that so far, 138 universities, or around 70 per cent of all varsities in the country registered with the commission, have submitted information about their readiness for online classes. Moreover, universities were assigned percentages based on the detail of information provided by the deadline.

According to the information provided by the universities so far, HEC said that faculties are delivering 108,084 out of 112,109 courses online to students. Moreover, 42,392 faculty members have been trained on how to provide education online.

This accounts for 86.7 per cent of the 48,851 faculty members who have been conducting online classes ever since the start of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Similarly, 127 out of the 138 universities said that they have started providing their students with access to digital libraries.

The commission, though, noted that it will evaluate the information provided by the universities once all registered institutions update them.
