ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Thursday upgraded the employment cadre for the head of the apex education body that oversees affairs of over 400 public schools and colleges in the federal capital.

In a notification issued by the Federal Ministry for Education and Professional Training, the post of the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) director-general (DG) has been enhanced from basic pay scale (BPS) grade 20 to BPS-21. The post can either be filled by advertising for it publicly and inviting candidates or through deputation from any other department.

The changes to the cadre were approved by Prime Minister Imran Khan

Further, the ministry officials said that they have sent a summary for creating two new positions in the FDE, of deputy director generals (DDG), to the finance ministry for approval.

However, sources claimed that as per the Esta Code, a post that can be filled only through promotion cannot be upgraded. They added that the seats of three directors in FDE had been lying vacant while the education ministry had sent cases against the promotion of three senior directors to the central selection board, the sources informed.

A senior official in the education ministry told The Express Tribune that to offset positions of senior directors, they have sought to add two seats of DDG, and for this purpose, a summary has been forwarded to the finance ministry after approval from the federal education minister.
