ISLAMABAD: With the construction of the road and civil works almost complete, work has started on the project to install traffic lights on Ataturk Avenue from Khayaban-e-Soharwardi to Nazimuddin Road.

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) plans to install traffic signals at six different locations, including the junction of Ataturk Avenue with Khyaban-e-Soharwardi, NADRA Chowk, the junction of Ataturk Avenue with Fazal-e-Haq Road and the junction of Ataturk Avenue with Jinnah Avenue.

In this regard, the CDA has floated tenders while funds worth Rs7.611 million have been issued.

The traffic lights being installed will be part of the smart signalling initiative being taken up by the CDA to improve traffic management in the city.

Work on expanding Ataturk Avenue was initiated in 2017. Officials said that over 90 per cent of work on the avenue has been completed and the installation of traffic signals along the avenue will bring it closer to completion.

Traffic in the federal capital, like its population, has increased in recent years. It even prompted the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) to enhance the fines for traffic violations.

As per existing challans, the ITP could only fine Rs100 and Rs300 to those who did not wear helmets and seat belts while driving. Similarly, Rs500 was the highest amount of a challan for jumping the red signal and use of mobile phones while driving, he added.

A summary for the enhancement in the number of traffic challans sent to the Interior Ministry for approval of the competent authority has proposed a maximum fine of Rs5,000 for habitual violators. Further, the ITP has proposed Rs1,000 as the minimum ticket for speeding, overloading, lane violation and the use of tinted glass and heavy silencers.
