5 films to watch on Father’s Day

Keep it simple and special with a cosy night in with your big man

With the coronavirus pandemic still raging in most parts of the world, many special occasions and holidays have passed through without any celebrations – from Eid and Mother’s Day to your best friend’s birthday and now, Father’s Day.

Some may settle for a virtual wish to their father but if you want to keep it simple and special at the same time, there’s not much effort you will have to put in to arrange a classic, old-school movie night with your big man.

If you live with him, you’re in for luck, but if you don’t you’re still in for some luck! Pop a bag of popcorn in the microwave, set your laptop or TV up and snuggle in for a special night! Psst... if you’re looking to make it even more special, you can make him some treats as an extra dose of love! The Pursuit of Happyness



This true story of how an African-American man, Chris Gardener, overcame exceptionally low circumstances in his life to give his son a better one is a real tear-jerker! Not just that, it’s also a great film to get you to thank your father for all he’s done to give you the life you have right now. Not to mention, Will Smith and his son Jaden are a class act in this.

Interstellar



Yes, we know. This one doesn’t really strike as a ‘Father’s Day’ staple but actually, is one of the best films you can watch to understand a father’s love for his children. The story revolves around a father – played by Matthew McConaughey and how his love takes him to epic heights as he goes on a mission to find another planet for his family (and the entire human race) to survive on.

Big Daddy



Adam Sandler is always a good idea when you need some comic relief. Who doesn’t enjoy a hearty laughing session? This film also jointly features young Cole and Dylan Sprouse as the young boy to whom Sandler becomes a father figure, by chance. If you want to keep it light this day and comedy is right up your alley, this one’s for you.

Mrs. Doubtfire



Robin Williams is a delight to watch in this classic and it is perhaps one of his most iconic roles. It also depicts the lengths to which a father can go to see his children. Williams transforms himself into a matronly nanny for a chance to spend time with his kids!

The Descendants



This one deals with some heavy material – a father is entrusted the sole responsibility of his two young daughters after his wife gets into an accident that leaves her comatose. While his older one has a history of substance abuse, the younger one has behavioural issues. It’s a beautiful lesson to watch him find ways to connect with his daughters and we see their family getting together, overcoming all their personal differences.
