KARACHI: The Grand Health Alliance (GHA) announced on Wednesday that the outpatient departments (OPDs) of public hospitals would be closed across the province from Thursday (today) to Monday.

Doctors, nurses, and paramedics continued their protest for the third consecutive day, closing OPDs for a few hours. Later, GHA representatives decided upon a complete boycott of OPDs from Thursday (today).

"We have been protesting for three days, but no government official has approached us," said one of the protestors.

GHA representatives pointed out that they had given the government an ultimatum of three days to address their demands and since this time was up, they would boycott OPDs until June 15. However, they added, emergency wards, isolation wards, intensive care units and emergency operation theatres would remain functional. Blaming the authorities, they said that the government would be responsible for any losses resulting from the boycott, adding that they would chalk out a stricter strategy if their demands were not approved.

Their demands include the provision of a martyrs package for healthcare workers dying while fighting coronavirus and health risk allowances, among others.
