ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad High Court has changed the bench that was to hear the petition challenging the appointments of Prime Minister Imran Khan's special aides.

According to the new cause list issued by the registrar's office, a two-member bench comprising Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb and Justice Ghulam Azam Qambrani will be hearing the petition on June 2, 2020.

Previously, the bench had comprised of Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Qambrani.

The petition has challenged the qualifications of advisers and assistants to Prime Minister Imran Khan, Zulfi Bukhari, Shehzad Akbar, Usman Dar, Ali Nawaz Awan, Nadeem Afzal Chan, Dr Zafar Mirza, Moeed Yousuf, Nadeem Babar and Sania Nishtar.

Others such as Yousuf Baig Mirza, Shamshad Akhtar, Firdous Ashiq Awan and Iftikhar Durrani, have now resigned, while Naeemul Haq has passed away.

The petition prayed to the court to declare the appointments of special assistants unconstitutional and annul them.

The Centre has submitted its reply before the court in this regard.

Earlier, the Supreme Court Registrar’s office had refused to entertain a similar petition while maintaining that the petitioners had not approached the proper forum to address their grievances.

Lawyers Muhammad Arshad Khan and Ghulam Dastagir Butt had filed a constitutional petition in the SC under Article 184(3) through Jahangir Jadoon who is also the office bearer of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) legal wing.
