KARACHI:

Two rival groups fought a gun battle in Godhra Camp on Saturday, resulting in the death of one man.

It erupted after a Sunni Tehreek (ST) worker, Allama Zahid Qadri, was killed in Surjani on Friday night. Violence erupted in Godhran after the killing. Another ST worker, Asif Qadri, died in the gunfight with the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP). Two bystanders were also injured.

A heavy contingent of police reached the scene to resolve situation. SHO Mohammad Rashid told The Express Tribune that scores of residents, including women, protested against the incident and tried to stop the police from entering the area.

“The houses of the workers from both groups were searched but no one was present,” he said.

The spokesman for ST, Fahim Qadri, said that three of their workers have been killed since the group announced it was working for the restoration of peace in the city.

On the other hand, the SSP denied the allegations as being ‘baseless’. “Some elements are trying to hatch a conspiracy against our organization,” said a spokesman.
