GILGIT:

The government has decided to decrease the intensity of cell phone signal jamming devices in Gilgit, which will improve cell phone services inside the city, a top city administration official said on Friday.

Assistant Commissioner Usman Ahmed said that the administration will not remove the jammers installed in Gilgit jails.

“These are meant to prevent prisoners from using cell phones…the (use of cell phone) jammers will continue for an indefinite period,” Usman Ahmed, the assistant commissioner of Gilgit said. However, he said, the government has decided to decrease their intensity.

Following the installation of the jammers, the service of all major cell phone companies deteriorated, prompting a flood of user complaints.
