Internet usage around the world has spiked amid the coronavirus lockdown, due to an increase in online activities by educational institutions and businesses and, ‘work from home’ policy adopted by individuals and organisations.

28% of people around the world don’t think they will be able to survive a single day without wifi, according to a study conducted by Kelton Research and commissioned by Google.

In addition to this, the study also found that 81% of people have experienced issues with their internet at home.

To counter this problem Google Blogs shared some simple tricks that can help to maximise your home Wi-Fi network range to avoid slow downloading.

Make sure your router is up to date.

It is important to check if you have an upgraded router that supports 5GHz Wi-Fi signals because sometimes old routers are the main reason for slow internet.

Routers that are dated can only support 2.4GHz signals, which can slow down the performance of your devices.

Place your router as centrally as possible.

One of the most essential things to do for a good Wi-Fi signal is to place the router as centrally as possible within your home.

The main reason behind this is that the farther away you go from your router, the weaker the signals get.

Consider a mesh network.

A mesh network is a group of routers that wirelessly communicate with each other to create a single, connected Wi-Fi network over a large area.

This enables users to have multiple sources of powerful Wi-Fi throughout your home, not just one from the main router.

Make your network password-protected.

Keeping a password-free Wi-Fi connection seems quite convenient especially when guests keep asking for your password, however, the drawback to this is that anyone could join your Wi-Fi network and compromise your network, devices, and data by accessing your drives or slowing down your network.

Hence it is immensely important to pick a strong password that no one can figure out and you can easily remember.

Create a separate Wi-Fi network for guests.

Having too many people using a single Wi-Fi network in your house slows internet connectivity, therefore, you could set up a second Wi-Fi network in your home so when you have guests over they can enjoy an uninterrupted internet connection while your own devices stay secure and private.
