MULTAN: Doctors at Multan Nishtar Hospital’s Pak Italian Modern Burn Centre have successfully reattached the severed hand of an infant and saved him from a lifetime of disability.

Dr Akmal Shah, a senior plastic surgeon at Nishtar Hospital’s burn centre, and his team rejoined the severed hand of one-and-a-half years old Ishaq after a complicated surgery.

The victim’s hand came into a chaff cutter while playing and the parents took their son immediately to the hospital with the severed hand, The Express Tribune learnt. The medical team at the burn centre carried out a complicated surgery on Saturday and reattached the severed hand of the boy, saving him from becoming handicapped.

The parents of the boy were ecstatic after hearing about the success of the surgery and said they were grateful to the plastic surgeon and his team for saving their child.

Dr Bilal Saeed, a senior surgeon at the burn centre, said a number of cases of people’s hands getting severed in accidents are reported from southern Punjab, including Multan. “Everyone should be careful while doing their work and, otherwise, try to reach Nishtar Hospital as soon as possible.”

The relatives of the patient should also remember to preserve the severed organ in a plastic bag immediately after the accident, he added. The sooner the injured makes it to the hospital, the more are the chances of a successful surgery, the senior surgeon further said.
