RAWALPINDI: Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has formally approved Kohsar University in Murree.

The facility, besides teaching other subjects, will focus on tourism and hospitality studies. A notification in this regard is expected to be issued by the Punjab governor next week after approval by the provincial assembly, sources told The Express Tribune on Saturday.

Punjab House in Murree would serve as the institution’s building while the varsity would become operational from the start of the academic year in August.

The appointment for the vice-chancellor would be done by March following the recruitment of faculty members and non-teaching staff.

In this regard, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Member National Assembly (MNA) Sadaqat Abbasi told The Express Tribune that the university will have a separate department for tourism studies. Students would be at the most popular tourist spot of the country and therefore they would not face any kind of problems in their practical projects, Abbasi said.

He added that the establishment of the institution would also open opportunities for higher education for students living around the area. The lawmaker said that the university would have hostels for the students coming from other areas of the country.

Abbasi said that the varsity would come into existence after the governor’s notification which would be issued after the bill relating to it was approved by Punjab assembly.

The notifications regarding the establishment of three new universities in Rawalpindi district including Potohar University, Information Technology (IT) University and Railway University would be issued within the next three months, the MNA asserted.

Abbasi added that the development work for up-gradation of the 60-bed Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital in Kahuta to a 100-bed hospital has been kicked off after the chief minister released funds for it.

The MNA said that the project would be completed in two phases with the addition of 20 beds in each phase.

Under the project, the construction of new wards on the adjoining land to the hospital has also been started, he added.

Further, another Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) from ruling PTI, Raja Sagheer, confirmed to The Express Tribune that the outpatient department (OPD) and operation theatre (OT) of THQ Kahuta were being upgraded. He added that an adequate supply of medicines particularly snake-bite and dog-bite vaccines would be ensured in the healthcare facility.

Sagheer informed that the road projects from Beavar to Kahuta and Markazi Chowk Pindori have also been approved.
