Rangers arrest ‘extortionists’

The suspects were allegedly members of a banned outfit

KARACHI: Two members of a banned outfit involved in extortion were arrested by the Sindh Rangers during an operation carried out in West district on Wednesday, while weapons and ammunition were also confiscated from their extortion.

According to the Rangers, the arrested men, identified as Rasheed alias Khan Baba alias Bala and Ismail alias Chips Wala, were wanted by the Swat administration as well as law enforcement agencies. Fearing arrest, Rasheed fled to Karachi and started carrying out extortion on the orders of Saifullah and Salman alias Abrar, both members of a banned outfit. Meanwhile, Ismail, a resident of Karachi, is said to be a facilitator of the group.

The suspects are also accused of opening fire at a shopkeeper who refused to pay extortion in Orangi Town, and sending threats to the owner of a car rental company and a scrap dealer. FIRs for these incidents had been registered at Mominabad Police Station.

The suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation.
