KARACHI: The suspects convicted for the murder of acclaimed qawwal Amjad Sabri were presented with copies of another case against them by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Thursday.

Jail officials presented convicts Ishaq Bobby and Asim Capri in court in a hearing pertaining to an attack on an imambargah. The copies of the case were handed over to the convicts, and the court stated that the accused would be indicted on January 16.

According to the investigation officer, Bobby and Capri, who belong to a banned outfit, carried out a cracker attack at an imambargah in FC Area on October 17, 2016. As a result of the attack, 11-year-old Faraz Hussain died on the spot, while 31 others sustained injuries.

The convicts reportedly confessed to the crime during the course of interrogation. They were also identified by the plaintiff of the case, which was registered against them at Sharifabad Police Station.

A military court had earlier awarded the death sentence to Bobby and Capri for their involvement in Sabri's murder.

Bail approved

Separately, an ATC approved the bail of a suspect who had been an absconder for seven years in a case involving vandalism and damage to public property near the United States Consulate in Karachi.

The accused, Syed Sadiq Raza, was presented before the court and directed to submit surety bonds of Rs100,000 for his release on bail. The court also ordered the West SSP to appoint an investigation officer for the case.

Raza had earlier been granted protective bail by the Sindh High Court.

According to the police, a rally was carried out by a religious party on September 15, 2012, marching from Numaish Chowrangi to the US Consulate at Moulvi Tamizuddin Khan Road. Police claimed that the participants of the rally resorted to agitation and vandalism, leaving several police and Rangers officials as well as protestors injured. A traffic check-post near the consulate was also torched, burning public records and property.

The challan for the case was submitted by the police in 2012, with the case registered at Jackson Police Station with various charges, including vandalism.

Delay tactics

Meanwhile, a district and sessions court directed jail officials on Thursday to submit the medical reports of the accused in the murder case of television anchor Mureed Abbas.

The accused, Atif Zaman, was not present during a hearing at Karachi Central Jail's judicial complex. The court had previously fixed this date for the indictment of charges. Jail officials maintained that the accused was absent due to ill health, providing an application in this regard.

The prosecution claimed that the accused was using delay tactics to avoid indictment and sabotage the trial. A murder case which entails immediate conviction is being unnecessarily deferred, maintained the plaintiffs, demanding justice for the victim.

The court expressed annoyance at the absence of the accused and directed jail officials to submit medical reports. It also issued notices to the prosecutor-general and the plaintiff, seeking replies on the bail plea filed on Zaman's behalf by January 14.
