KARACHI: The flow of traffic on the strip of road stretching from Hassan Square to NIPA Chowrangi was badly affected after a sinkhole appeared on the thoroughfare on Friday afternoon.

According to traffic police, a slope appeared on the road on Thursday, which later developed into a hole.

Meanwhile, a Karachi Development Authority (KDA) team reached the spot to examine the damage. Officials said that a strategy had been prepared to repair the road and machinery for this purpose was sought on an immediate basis. The repair work, which began on Friday at 12am, will continue till Saturday, they said.

Sinkhole near Hotel Metropole causes traffic disruption

Traffic police officials have been deputed along the length of the damaged road to avoid any untoward incident. Locals attributed the creation of the sinkhole to leakage from a blocked sewerage pipeline near Expo Centre.

The affected road was constructed in June 2017, at a cost of Rs884.2 million, as part of the Karachi Development Package worth Rs10 billion. At the time of its construction, it was claimed that rainwater drains and underground lines have been built to secure the thoroughfare against any damage.
