The Punjab IG has formulated a set of policy guidelines to improve the morale of the police force and to curb corruption and “highhandedness”.
The guidelines have been circulated among all field officers from the rank of deputy inspector general (DIG) to station house officer (SHO), said an official requesting anonymity. The police will also devise a mechanism to obtain and analyse feedback concerning the initiatives, he added.
IG Javed Iqbal instructed officers to maintain peace and order with public support; combat terrorism, sectarianism and militancy; ensure security of vital installations; eliminate kidnappings for ransom; enforce traffic discipline; ensure prompt and free registration of cases and fair and speedy investigations; show zero tolerance for violence; and give professional and prompt responses to calls for service.
The IG issued guidelines on how to fight street crime and prevent suspects escaping from custody, and standard operating procedures for judges and court security. He urged officers to be honest and avoid corruption.
Senior police officials said that Iqbal had adopted a by-the-book strategy to improve the function and morale of the force. They said he would need to develop a monitoring mechanism to evaluate how the initiatives were doing.
