ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Monday extended the date for filing income tax returns for individuals and companies to December 31, 2019 after it failed to match last year’s number of return filers.

By the third extended date, 1.89 million taxpayers submitted annual income tax returns for the tax year 2019, which were lower by 710,000 or 28% as compared to the return filers in the tax year 2018. In tax year 2018, after numerous extensions, 2.6 million people had filed income
tax returns.

However, the FBR said that as compared to December 16, 2018, the number of return filers was higher by 462,000 or 32% when 1.428 million had submitted their returns.

The continued extension in the date for filing income tax returns has showed that the FBR has once again failed to enforce the writ of law. Under the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, the last statutory date for filing the returns is September 30 of each year.
