PESHAWAR: Even as the province waits with bated breath on when elections for a new local government system will be announced, the provincial government on Wednesday assuaged fears that projects prepared and approved by the outgoing local government will be binned when a new administration takes over.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Local Government Minister Shahram Khan Tarakai said that all approved plans of the previous local government, whose term had ended in August, will be completed without any modification.

Tarakai added that the ministry has also devised a comprehensive and integrated strategy to approve the proposed but unapproved and other pending schemes of the previous local government, irrespective of the political affiliation of the respective elected representatives.

“All decisions made in this regard will be purely based on merit,” he said, warning that the black sheep in the department will also face action soon.

He added that they had adopted several measures to bring transparency in the local government system including the installation of biometric attendance systems at the town offices set up throughout the province.

Tarakai expressed the commitment that soon, the public will be able to witness the department’s performance as they were setting up an online portal which will provide regular updates on the progress made by various projects.
