Qirat Baber on her journey to becoming a make-up artist

The Beauty Edit: Qirat Baber

What inspired you to become a make-up artist and how has your journey been so far?
Honestly, I had no idea I was going to be one; I wasn’t ever into girly things. I have brothers in the house so I always had the tom boy vibe. Slowly and gradually I started using my mom’s make-up and God knows when that became my passion and now my profession. I am not going to lie, the journey has been tough, there’s so much competition in the market and having to make yourself stand out and generate different content takes a whole lot of your life but it’s been an amazing journey where I keep learning and improving with each day.

What is your area of expertise?
I am all about the natural look. I am not a fan of cakey make-up at all. People come to me and tell me they love how natural my make-up is.
What are some of the make-up and hair trends that your salon is offering?
Out of all the trends, we love the no make-up, make-up look- fresh, clean and subtle. Opt for some beachy waves and you’ll be bang on trend.

What are the challenges that come with your job and how do you overcome them?
Dealing with different clients, making them understand your point of view, what you think will look nice. We do different faces every day and now my team and I can just tell by looking at people what they’ll be able to carry better. Convincing them is another story, sometimes they understand sometimes they don’t. Also everyone’s skin is different; people come with different images and expect to get exactly the same look which isn’t possible. We always try to explain it to them nicely and more often than not it works!
Who or what is your greatest professional and personal strength?
My friends and family are my personal strength. They always support me and encourage me. Professionally, there are too many to name. I look up to a lot of people and how they started from the bottom and have come so far.

In your opinion, what social stigma does society need to get over?
Colour - your colour does NOT define you!! We need to get out of this mind set. It is very important to feel comfortable in our own skin. Earlier everyone wished to have a light skin tone but that’s changing. I have seen a change, it might be 1% but it’s happening
What is the most gratifying part of your job?
Nothing is more gratifying than seeing your clients satisfied and happy with the hair and make-up look you give them.
