RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government has set up 19 adult literacy centres (ALCs) in Rawalpindi for prisoners, transgender and minority communities under its province-wide literacy programme.
Literacy District Officer (DOL) Ghulam Ahmed Akash told the media that 11 ALCs for prisoners in Adiala Jail, two ALCs for people who are transgenders, one for Hindu community in Lalkurti temple and five ALCs have been set up for the Christian community in various parts of the city.
He said minorities, people who are transgenders and prisoners have been especially focused on the literacy programme. He added that the centres have been formed under the supervision of Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar and Provincial Minister for Informal Education Raja Rashid Hafiz.
The DOL said that all 19 ALCs began functioning from November 15 where illiterate adults were being taught a special syllabus created by the Punjab Informal Education department for three months to make them literate citizens.
