The day-long seminar titled ‘Metaphysical and Modern Poetry’ was organised by the Department of English, SU on Monday.
The event featured a dialogue between literary figures who spoke about the youth being an agent of change and other key stakeholders who must write poetry closer to emotional values adaptable in all cultural geographies of the world.
Professor of Qurtuba University, Peshawar, Dr Zahir Jang Khattak, Professor Zil-e-Hasnain Bukhari, SU English Department Incharge Ijaz Asghar Bhatti, SU English Department Professor Hira Ali, other faculty members of the university and students were also present on the occasion.
Addressing the seminar, Dr Khattak stressed on the inclusion of human rights in poetry as moral values keep different members of society together.
He enlightened the students about the works of George Herbert, John Donne and many other metaphysical poets and briefed them on how modern citizens can do their own research in the field of poetry.
Dr Khattak maintained that there is interesting research in the dynamic areas of metaphysical and modern poetry literature.
Other speakers expressed that the metaphysical style has maintained its identity, integrity and stimulated fresh critical interpretation and vital poetic experimentation.
Commenting on the literary lull in contemporary society, Professor Bukhari said that the apathy of society must come to an end and books should be read by everyone.
”The biggest reward for an author is when his work is acknowledged, but unfortunately in our society, only the best sellers are read.”
The professor also discussed classical, romantic and modern poetry in the process of developing diverse cultural identities through language and literature.
