ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on Thursday nominated Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh for the post of the Lahore High Court chief justice.

The commission will now meet on November 21 to consider the names of judges for appointment to the Islamabad High Court.

The meeting of the commission was presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa.

The incumbent chief justice of the Lahore High Court, Justice Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan, will retire on December 31.

Justice Sheikh’s name for the post will be notified after the endorsement of the Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment.

In its next meeting, the JCP will consider the names of Advocate Ghulam Azam Qambrani from Balochistan, Fayaz Jandran from Islamabad and Bani Pervaiz from Sindh for appointment to the Islamabad High Court.

After taking oath, Justice Sheikh will serve as LHC CJ till March 18 next year.

He is the son-in-law of renowned lawyer AK Dogar.

Currently, 45 judges are working at the LHC whereas the total strength is 60. Only four judges are working in IHC, while the total slots are seven. The number of cases at the IHC is increasing with each passing day.

Senior lawyers are expressing concern over the delay in the appointments of judges in both the high courts.

The superior bars are also demanding the amendments in JCP rules 2010.

The JCP is a constitutional body tasked with making recommendations to the Parliamentary Committee for appointment of judges of the Supreme Court, the chief justices and judges of the Federal Shariat Court and the high courts.
