UN Habitat to extend support for clean, green movement in Pakistan

Programme committed to encouraging inclusive, sustainable cities

United Nations (UN) Habitat stands ready to extend support for the Clean and Green Pakistan Movement for competitive, inclusive, economically viable and sustainable green cities.

This was said by UN Habitat Programme Manager Jawed Ali Khan. He reiterated UN Habitat’s commitment to work with all tiers of the governments for cities and towns to create, protect and manage public spaces and to provide a clean and healthy environment.

The programme manager said this at an event which was organised in Argentina Park to celebrate Urban October-World Cities Day with the declaration of Argentina Park as Model Park under the Clean Green Pakistan Movement on October 28.

Every year the UN Habitat globally commemorates Urban October beginning with World Habitat Day on the first Monday of every October and culminating on October 31 with the celebration of World Cities Day to sensitise people and all stakeholders to joins hands to make cities livable, economically vibrant, safe, resilient and sustainable.

This year the Urban October event commenced with celebration of World Habitat Day at Pak Turk School and College in Islamabad. laying the foundation of the Environment Club in Pak Turk School and College to be replicated in its other branches throughout Pakistan World Cities Day Programme starting with a ribbon-cutting by Advisor to PM on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam and formally declared Argentina Park as a model park under the Clean Green Pakistan Movement. Saplings were also planted by the dignitaries.

Amin Aslam said that this landmark decision is the outcome of the collective endeavors of the civil society organisations and citizens of Islamabad. He added that parks are the lungs of the cities and are key providers of a clean ecosystem within cities.  Argentina Park located beside the Polyclinic Hospital will play an important role in providing clean air and a healthy environment not only to patients but also to the visitors and people of Islamabad in general.
