Five suspects arrested for abducting, murdering minor boy in Rawalpindi

Police collect evidence, confident of swift resolution of case

RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi police on Sunday claimed to have arrested five people over their suspected involvement in the abduction and murder of a nine-year-old boy even as police officials admitted that there have been as many as 63 cases of kidnapping, rape and murder in the city so far this year.

Police said that nine-year-old Naveed Khan mysteriously disappeared on October 10. His body was recovered five days later from Shah Khalid Colony on October 15.

The Airport police subsequently registered a case against unidentified kidnappers and murderers of the boy. They collected evidence from the site and started a probe into the matter.

Five days after the missing boy’s body was discovered, police claimed to have arrested five suspects whom they believe were involved in the incident.

Potohar SP Syed Ali said that they have arrested Anjum Ashfaq, Imran, Naveed, Mir Zaman and his son Abdul Razzaq.

Talking about the suspects, the SP said Ashfaq has a criminal record of molesting minors. Other suspects included Imran, who hails from Sargodha, and Naveed — who worked as a watchman — were arrested for their history of immoral activities.

The two other suspects, including Mir Zaman and Razzaq, ran a dairy farm, the official said, adding that they had obtained evidence with regards to their involvement.

He hoped that the case will be resolved swiftly.

63 kidnapped and raped so far

Meanwhile, the Rawalpindi police on Sunday said that there have been as many as 63 cases of k kidnapping, rape and murder have been reported in the garrison city in the first 10 months of the year.

Moreover, 31 cases were dismissed due to different reasons while there were 11 cases in which the police has so far presented charge-sheets against the suspects in the relevant courts. A further 11 cases are underway in different courts.

Officials, however, maintained that all cases of kidnapping or rape which took place this year have been solved.

City Police Officer (CPO) Faisal Rana was informed that some 60 of 70 children kidnapped this year have been recovered and handed over to their parents.

Further, the CPO said that the rate of victims’ recovery was the result of teamwork of Rawalpindi police while he pledged that he would protect each child of the garrison city like his own.

He directed to take precautionary measures against such incidents while he expressed that it had become essential now to run an awareness campaign for eradication of such offences.

He instructed the police officials to contact schools’ administrations to arrange a programme for students and inform them about the methods of how they could save themselves from any kind of assault.
