Hayat has been quite vocal in her activism as of late. As well as speaking up against the atrocities taking place in Indian-occupied Kashmir (IoK), she received her Pride of Performance award in Oslo recently. The actor then gave a heartfelt acceptance speech there, which went viral, about Bollywood “vilifying” the Pakistani entertainment industry and called for a mutual understanding.
Bollywood could have used cinema to promote mutual understanding instead of vilifying us as they do. They need to decide which is more important - nationalistic fervour or a peaceful future . pic.twitter.com/EzcK4L0zWD

In March, the actor received Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for her outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment and was also appointed the Muslim charity Penny Appeal's brand ambassador. The Chhalawa star also made it to the list of top five Muslim women changing the world by international publication Muslim Vibe.

I am so honoured to be chosen by the international Magazine, "Muslim Vibe" as one of the top five Muslim women in the world who are breaking stereotypes and changing the world. To be thought of in the same breath as women I look up to is humbling 🙏🙏🙏 https://t.co/3NUkAkIyQe

However, Hayat's long list of achievements has not been without controversy. Although the star has openly called out fellow artists from the other side of the border who have supported the Indian activities in Kashmir, she came under fire on social media after a snippet from a recent interview of hers went viral.
When asked to make a comment about Kashmir in the video, Hayat replied, “Nothing about Kashmir! I’ve been asked not to speak about Kashmir here.”

However, she quickly set the record straight on Twitter after a barrage of criticism. "I have big plans for the next steps. This was a charity event and I was requested by the PR team not to be political and distract from the orphans I was there to help," she tweeted.
