A similar crowd broke into the US embassy but later left, they added. A US embassy official said the response of the Syrian authorities was "slow and insufficient".
There were no immediate reports of casualties in the attacks, which came three days after the US and French ambassadors visited the city of Hama in an unprecedented show of support for pro-democracy demonstrators, who have been gathering in the hundreds of thousands in Hama despite deadly military assaults on the city, scene of a 1982 massacre by the military.
US to call in Syrian diplomat over embassy attack
The US State Department plans to call in Syria's senior diplomat in Washington to complain about an attack on the U.S. embassy in Damascus, a US official said on Monday.
"We are calling in the Syrian charge (d'affaires) to complain," said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity, saying no US personnel were injured in the attack.
"We feel they failed (in their responsibility to protect US diplomats). We are going to condemn their slow response."

Assalam-o-Allaikum Warahmatullah. This aggressive attitude is only as a consequence of US and advanced Western Countries' enmity and prejudicial attitudes for the muslims all over the world and if USA and advanced Western countries didn't leave their this -ve attitude towards the muslims and the Islamic world then such this type of aggressive and hatred attitude of the muslims they shall face.
I guess the Syrian's were unhappy that the USA and France ambassadors took a trip to see the slaughter of Syrian civilians first hand. I congratulate these ambassadors because they could have sat in their cozy offices and read accounts on the internet - but now they can give their govt's first hand accounts.
