LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb has said three times prime minister Nawaz Sharif has not been found guilty of any corruption, yet he has been languishing in jail for a whole year.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the PML-N central spokesperson alleged that all PML-N leaders – the companions of Nawaz Sharif – are put behind bars without even a proper allegation of corruption.

“All these individuals are being punished only for their support for Nawaz and their untiring service for the country,” said Marriyum, “All these dedicated public servants are prisoners of their principles.”

Condemning the imprisonment of political leaders, she said such tactics cannot stop them from supporting Nawaz Sharif.

“NAB [National Accountability Bureau] asked Maryam Nawaz as to why her grandfather gave her rightful share from ancestral property. She has been behind bars for over two months on the basis of such fictitious charges. It does not make any sense whatsoever.

“Similarly Khawaja Saad Rafique, Khawaja Salman Rafique, Miftah Ismail, Hamza Shehbaz, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Rana Sanaullah and Kamran Michael are under trial without any evidence of corruption. None of them have been accused of corruption,” said Marriyum.

The former information minister said: “Khawaja Saad Rafique revived Railways and has been imprisoned over private business transactions. Hamza has been locked up for five months without a dime of proven corruption. Khawaja Salman rid Punjab of the dangerous dengue and transformed the healthcare of the province but he is also put behind bars.”

She alleged that Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has been sent to jail over charges of abuse of power while there is not a single charge of corruption against him.

“Rana Sanaullah was held in the most blatant and ridiculous act of political victimisation. Miftah Ismail has been imprisoned without even an established accusation. Yousaf Abbas’s greatest sin is that he is related to Nawaz Sharif and despite not holding any public office ever, he too is a victim of vengeance.”

The PML-N spokesperson alleged that Fawad Hassan Fawad and Ahad Cheema are being grilled only because they refused to become false approvers against Shehbaz Sharif and Nawaz Sharif and Imranul Haq is facing the same fate for rejecting the same option against Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

She slammed the “political victimisation” campaign of the PTI government and said, “all these actions cannot silence the opposition”. Marriyum also criticised the tactics of denying food, bedding, legal rights to the imprisoned political leaders.
