GILGIT:

Father of a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader gunned down in a spate of target killings in February seems to have lost hope in the government.

Official sources said Mir Baz Khan, father of late Mir Nawaz Khan, appealed to the court to take a suo motu notice action against his son’s murderers, saying that the killer is “roaming around freely in the area”.

He said the silence of PPP over the issue is extremely disappointing, as his son had a long-term association with the party.

“The chief minister and the governor are completely ignoring the issue. They have forgotten the fact that their party leader sacrificed his life for the party,” said the grieved father.

Nawaz, a lawyer by profession, was among the pioneers of PPP, which devolved the powers of local representatives through a constitutional package known as Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self Governance Order 2009.

Police said they have arrested three suspects in case and are still looking for the fourth. The deceased’s father appreciated the role of judiciary, saying that the arrest of the suspects only came after the intervention of the judiciary. He requested the judiciary to ensure the arrest of the fourth suspect, who was the “mastermind of the murder”.

He also appreciated the support of local people, saying that the strong reaction shown by them was the main reason which prompted the judiciary to take action. “If people had not protested on roads, the killers would not have been arrested,” he remarked.
