In order to create awareness about the influence of climate change on human life, 16-year-old Swedish activist, Greta Thunberg, influenced 156 countries into holding over 5,000 strikes since the summit. These rallies aimed to target authorities in order to curb the growing pollutants and save the upcoming generations.
Following which, the recent and recurrent episodes of torrential rains, extreme temperatures, heat waves and cyclone warnings, also indicated that Pakistan has fallen prey to global warming.
Since Karachi is a coastal zone, it requires immediate attention in terms of natural preservation. However, it contains six industrial zones with around 10,000 industrial units that manufacture everything, ranging from textiles to paints to chemicals, and the most polluting waste products are the tanneries. While the coast remains polluted with plastic remains as the continual oil spills deteriorate conditions even further.
Owing to this, several celebrities also joined in the march held yesterday at Frere Hall, to declare a climate emergency and demand immediate action. Their slogan included, “The climate crisis won’t wait, so neither will we.”
Here is a list of celebrities who held banners, vouching for a clean Pakistan and quite intellectually calling out factors that harm the natural habitat.
