Bus bombing kills 12 people near Iraqi city of Karbala: security services

The explosive device planted on the bus detonated at a northern entrance to the city

A bus bombing killed at least 12 people and wounded several others on Friday near Iraq’s holy city of Karbala, south of Baghdad, a statement from Iraqi security services said.

Two police spokesmen in the area said an explosive device planted on the bus detonated at a northern entrance to the city, setting fire to the vehicle.

They said the wounded were rushed to the hospital.

At least 31 dead in stampede at Karbala shrine on Ashura

Earlier in September, at least 31 pilgrims died and dozens injured in a stampede at a major shrine in Karbala.

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world swarmed Karbala to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA).

As the massive crowds pressed forward, a stampede broke out that left at least 31 people dead and another 100 wounded, according to Iraq’s health ministry.
