CJ says judiciary needs better training

Iftikhar Chaudhary says judicial education has never been prioritised.

ISLAMABAD:

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muham-mad Chaudhary said on Friday that professional training is essential for the judiciary.

“The judicial system stands firmly on the quality of education in professional training institutions,” he said in an address at the foundation stone ceremony of the Federal Judicial Academy (FJA), Phase-II.

The chief justice said that judicial education has never been prioritised or considered a specialised field by policy makers, which has led to the deterioration of legal and judicial education.

Inability to apply the law is a direct consequence of lack of knowledge, he said.  The chief justice added that professional judicial training academies have to play a more pro-active role in ensuring good judicial practices and legal education to judges, court personnel, law officers and lawyers.

Highlighting the academy’s importance, the CJP said, in addition to disseminating judicial education, its mandate includes developing national cohesion. The FJA was established in Sept, 1988 and it gained statutory recognition with the enforcement of the Federal Judicial Academy Act, 1997.

Since judges come from the ranks of attorney's and the attorney's are the ones who were most vocal in their support of OBL ---- I have no doubt you need more or something. Unfortunately education doesn't necessarily give one a moral compass which is probably the most important attribute in a judge.
