Committee suggests review acquittals

In the light of the directions issued by the Supreme Court, a district review committee set up by IG Amir Zulfiqar has proposed reviewing cases of people released by the courts on grounds of faulty investigations.

The committee in its meeting on Wednesday observed that many people accused of heinous crimes were acquitted or granted bails by courts for shortcomings in the investigation by the police.

Therefore, it said, such cases should be re-investigated and criminals brought to justice.

Committee Chairman Rawalpindi Sessions Judge Malik Nazir Ahmed chaired the meeting attended by SP Investigation Dr Syed Mustafa Tanveer, Islamabad Bar Advocate Imran Feroz, DSP Legal Branch (Secretary) Azhar Hussain Shah, Islamabad Deputy District Attorney Amjad Ali, Inspector Irshad Ali Abro, Inspector Asjid Mehmood, Inspector Malik Mohammad Bashir.

According to the police, the meeting reviewed the suspects acquitted and released on bail in the cases of terrorism, murder, rape and robbery from January to July this year.

The committee outlined the defects in investigation which helped the accused involved in heinous crimes walk free.
