MULTAN: Commissioner Iftikhar Ali Sahu assigned the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) the responsibility to operate all water filtration plants in the city after reports surfaced that 58 plants in Multan division were non-functional.

Presiding over a meeting on Wednesday, the commissioner asked the department of public health and engineering to hand over all water filtration plants to WASA after making them operational.

The commissioner was informed that out of 507 filtration plants in Multan division, about 449 were functional.

Sahu stated that the Punjab government was determined to provide clean drinking water to the people in order to prevent the spread of diseases such as hepatitis.

He said that WASA would be bound to run all filtration plants and added that a strategy was being devised to offer financial assistance to the agency to cover operational costs.

Deputy Commissioner Amir Khatak said that the non-functional filtration plants will soon be made operational, adding that he will personally monitor the process.
