A two-member bench comprising Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Agha Faisal was hearing a plea pertaining to the spread of HIV/AIDS which was filed by the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (PILER), Dr Qaiser Sajjad and others.
The petitioners’ counsel maintained that a large number of patients have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in Larkana. “The virus has spread due to non-compliance of rules set for controlling HIV/AIDS,” he argued, adding that a human tragedy can occur due to the spread of the virus. “Rules and laws are present but they are not complied with. The government of Sindh should be directed to take immediate action in this regard,” he said. The counsel prayed the court that data be collected from prisons, hospitals, lockups and other places, and the Sindh HIV and AIDS Control, Treatment and Protection Act 2013 be implemented.
The government of Sindh has failed to form the Sindh AIDS Commission in six years, noted the bench.
KMC employees
Another two-member bench comprising Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Justice Kausar Sultana Hussain directed officials of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to give possession of quarters to government employees while hearing the case pertaining to allotment of quarters to government employees in Korangi.
The bench expressed annoyance at KMC officials for not giving possession of quarters to government employees and remarked that KMC couldn’t even provide security to its employees.
KMC’s counsel maintained that operations have carried out to make former employees vacate the quarters. “Issues with peace and security also arose due to vandalism by former employees,” he argued.
The bench directed KMC to give possession of the quarters to its employees with the help of police force.
