ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has advised all Regional Tax Offices (RTOs) and Large Taxpayer Units (LTUs) to issue notices to all industrial and commercial consumers of electricity and gas who have not filed their income tax returns.

Similarly, people owning vehicles of engine capacity of more than 1,000cc and property occupying more than one kanal land will also be issued notices demanding the filing of income tax returns.

A high-level committee has also been formed for boosting revenue collection from withholding taxes.

The approval was given during a meeting on Friday, which also decided to convene on August 19 in which officials from LTUs and RTOs would present progress on collection of withholding taxes.

As per the details available with The Express Tribune, the meeting, presided over by FBR Chairman Shabbar Zaidi, extensively reviewed tax collection during the current fiscal year till August 2019 against the specified targets.

Chief Commissioners, present at the meeting, briefed about tax collection in their designated departments while officials from RTOs and LTUs who reported failure to achieve tax collection targets were provided deadline extensions.

It was resolved that chief commissioners and commissioners who continuously exhibited poor performance would be replaced.

The participants were given a comprehensive roadmap for achieving tax targets of August and July 2019.

During the meeting, a committee was formed for boosting withholding tax collection and timely deposits into the national exchequer by the tax agents. In addition to boosting FBR's revenue, the committee will also help in monitoring of withholding tax collection. The meeting further urged the incharges of all field offices to ensure collection of taxes in their designated territories.
