Man booked for threatening cop after violating traffic rules

Accused identifies himself as a lawyer and had threatened traffic police official

KARACHI: Gizri Police have arrested a man for allegedly violating traffic rules and threatening a police official who had tried to stop the illegal activity. The accused in question was driving on the wrong side of the road in Gizri and was stopped by a police official.

An official of the Gizri Traffic Section issued a challan to the accused, identified as Shahnawaz Hussain Khan, for going the wrong way on Monday. The man identified himself as a lawyer and threatened the traffic police official. A video of the incident later went viral on social media.

The incident occurred at the traffic signal near Sultan Masjid on Monday when the accused violated the traffic rules. Khan threatened the traffic police official, Kamal, and said, "You don't know who I am. I am a lawyer and I will make you beg me to forgive you."

Taking notice of the incident, police arrested the accused and registered case no. 19/344 on behalf of head constable Kamal who is an official of Gizri Traffic Section. The FIR includes sections of negligence, intimidation and attempts to interfere in the dispensation of official duty.

According to South Traffic SSP Asad Mallhi, the accused not only violated traffic rules but also threatened a police official. The SSP said that no one is above the law and acting in accordance with the law is obligatory upon everyone. "The traffic police are serving citizens day and night," he said. "People should cooperate with the traffic police by following the laws and making roads safe for everyone."
