KARACHI: Services and General Coordination Department sacked six of the eight doctors who continued to collect their salaries despite remaining absent from their duties at Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical College, Lyari.

From among the absent doctors, Dr Anila Ahmed, Dr Shaista Naz, Dr Rozina Yasir, Dr Rana Hussain, Dr Aisha Haq and Dr Shehla Afsheen have been sacked, while Dr Shoaib Gangat, who is the professor of surgery at the college and senior registrar of the gynaecology department, Dr Mamtobai, have been exempted from dismissal.

According to the college's administration, the doctors have been absent for more than a year and didn't inform the administration of their leave.

Action against the doctors was taken on demand of the other doctors working at the health facility.

Earlier, a written complaint regarding the prolonged absence of doctors had been submitted to the health department by the college's principal, Dr Anjum Rehman, on March 13, 2019, and Pakistan Medical and Dental Council had also highlighted the issue in its report.
