AJK election fallout: MQM re-applies for opposition seats in Sindh Assembly

Previous application had been suspended on grounds that only 25 out of 51 MPAs had signed it.

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Sindh Assembly legislators on Saturday re-submitted an application to sit on the opposition benches in the provincial assembly.

Earlier, the MQM application to sit on opposition benches had been temporarily suspended on the grounds that only 25 MPAs had signed out of a total of 51.

The MQM provincial assembly members, under the chairmanship of Syed Sardar Ahmed, met at the assembly building and discussed the objections raised by Sindh Secretariat on the earlier application.

A signed application on behalf of 51 MQM Members of Provincial Assembly (MPA) was re-submitted.

Speaking to the media, Ahmed said that the party had completed the procedure for allotment of opposition seats and hoped the process would be completed today (Saturday).

They had resigned in protest over the postponement of the elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, sparking a political storm.

Under rule No. 5, every member of the assembly has to submit a separate application to sit on an opposition bench.

Another issue was the fact that while the MQM ministers sent their resignations, the presence of a minister was needed while they signed.

Sindh Assembly Deputy Speaker Shahla Raza had said a few MQM ministers were out of the country therefore their resignations could not be accepted.

Acting governor Nisar Khuhro had added that there was no constitutional binding that they had to accept or reject resignations within a certain period of time.
