LAHORE: Civil society organisations, working towards the promotion and protection of child’s rights, stressed the need for a strategy to ensure the implementation of laws to meet Pakistan’s obligations under the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child.

They expressed these views during a press conference on Tuesday organised by Search For Justice, a member organisation of the Child Rights Movement, Punjab.

Search For Justice Executive Director Iftikhar Mubarik shared that three years have passed since Pakistan received concluding observations and recommendations by the UN committee on the Rights of the Child.

“There is a dire need to follow up with relevant ministries and departments on a provincial level to track the progress of implementation as the country’s next periodic report is due in 2021,” he maintained. “Further, there is a need to establish an independent and empowered commission at a provincial level to oversee children’s rights,” he highlighted.

The provincial government, without any delay, must enact legislation to establish a commission to deal with the issues in the province on a sustainable basis, he added.

He urged the Punjab chief minister to supervise a comprehensive child protection policy. “The policy must be a guiding document for all government departments and authorities, thus its mandate must be broader.
